Frame Rough Opening Measuring Guide
This guide provides clear measuring instructions and reference tables to help ensure accurate rough openings for commercial door frames. Proper rough opening dimensions are critical for correct frame fitment, efficient installation, and long-term performance. The rough opening (RO) refers to the framed or structural space in the wall where the door frame will be installed. The required size of the rough opening depends on the wall type.
Masonry Wall Rough Opening Dimensions
A masonry rough opening is the structural opening in a concrete, CMU (concrete masonry unit), or brick wall where a commercial door frame will be installed. This type of opening must provide additional clearance beyond the frame size to allow for anchoring methods (such as wire or T-anchors), proper alignment, and optional grout fill.
Add 4½″ to frame opening width and 2¼″ to frame opening height.
-
Rough Opening Width = Frame Opening Width + 4½″
-
Rough Opening Height = Frame Opening Height + 2¼”
📌 Example: A frame opening of 36″ x 84″ would require a rough opening of 40½″ x 86¼″

Drywall Wall Rough Opening Dimensions
A drywall rough opening is created in walls framed with metal or wood studs and sheathed in gypsum board (drywall). These openings are typically used with knock-down frames and must allow space for the frame throat, compression or stud anchors, and adjustment shims to ensure proper alignment.
Add 2″ to frame opening width and 1″ to frame opening height.
-
Rough Opening Width = Frame Opening Width + 2″
-
Rough Opening Height = Frame Opening Height + 1″
📌 Example: A frame opening of 36″ x 84″ would require a rough opening of 38″ x 85″

By using the correct rough opening dimensions for each wall type, you ensure your door frames install accurately, operate smoothly, and meet jobsite requirements without costly rework. Whether you’re framing in CMU for a high-security opening or setting KD frames into metal studs for a fast-paced interior buildout, precise measuring is the foundation of a successful installation.
